The Village |
|
Shebbear is a predominantly farming village set in the midst of unspoilt Devon countryside between Hatherleigh and Holsworthy in North West Devon. The village is known for its traditon of the turning the Devil's Stone, which takes place each year on the fifth of November. The stone is located outside the village church opposite the pub and is of a composition unknown anywhere in Europe. Legend has it that the stone fell out of the Devil's pocket as he fell from Heaven to Hell. The church bell ringers turn it each year to keep the Devil away. |
